Chapter 2
Animals
1. Mammals are animals that have fur or hair. (dog, bear)
2. Reptiles are animals that have dry, scaly skin. (lizard, snake)
3. Birds are animals that have feathers. (blue jay, parrot)
4. Fish are animals that have scales. (gold fish, trout)
5. Amphibians are animals that have moist, smooth skin. (frog)
6. A life cycle is the many changes an animal goes through as it grows.
7. A frog hatches from an egg, it is tadpole, then it grow into a frog.
8. A tadpole is a young frog, it has a tail and no legs. It swims and breathes in the water.
9. A frog has legs, and no tail. Frogs live on land.

10. A caterpillar hatches from an egg. It makes a covering called a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis it is called a pupa. It breaks out of the chrysalis as a butterfly.(butterfly life cycle-egg, caterpillar, pupa in its chrysalis, adult butterfly)
11. A place where animals live is called its habitat. Animals can live in water, in the air, on land, and even under ground.
12. Endangered means that very few of these animals and plants are living. Many animals become endangered when their habitats change.
13. Plants use energy from the sun to make food. Animals eat the plants for food. Then other animals eat those animals for food. This is called the food chain.
14. A color or shape that makes an animal hard to see is called camouflage.
15. Animals protect themselves by running fast, using sharp teeth or claws, hiding in a shell, and using camouflage to hide.
