Unit D Chapter 2 -Nutrition
Lesson 1
1. The Food Guide Pyramid shows the food groups and how many servings you should eat every day from each food group. (You do not have to memorize this chart, just be familiar with the food groups and from which ones you need the most and least food.)
Whole Grains
(Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta)................ 6-11 servings
Vegetable Group......................................... 3-5 servings
Fruit Group ................................................. 2-4 servings
Dairy
(Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese Group)................ 2-3 servings
Meat, Beans, Poultry,
Fish, , Eggs, Nuts Group.............................2-3 servings
Fats, Oils, and Sweets.................................use sparingly (only a little)
Foods have different amounts of fat. Foods with less fat are more healthful to eat.
Our class experiment showed:
Butter and oil have the most fat.
Chips and snacks have a middle amount of fat.
Carrots have the least amount of fat.
Lesson 3 and 4 Chewing and Digestion
1. The process of breaking down food is called digestion.
2. Digestion begins in your mouth as food is chewed and mixes with saliva it starts to change.
3. After you swallow the food goes into a tube called the esophagus, which squeezes the food down into your stomach. Inside the stomach, the food is mixed until it is liquid.
4.Food then goes to the small intestine where most of digestion takes place.
5. The leftover liquid goes into the large intestine. It squeezes out the rest of the liquid and then passes solid waste out of the body.
6. Nutrients are materials in food that you need to grow and stay healthy. You get nutrients from digested food.
(Test questions will come from notes, information in the textbook, and class discussions.)
