Chapter 1-Lesson 1 Vocabulary:
Family-
a group of people who live together and experience the world together
Community
- a place where people live, work, and play together
Responsible-
to take care of important things
Respect
- to be kind and fair to others
Chapter 1-Lesson 2 Vocabulary:
Extended Family-
includes more than parents and children, such as aunts and uncles
Generation-
means people born and living around the same time
Guardian-
someone who cares for a family
Immigrant-
a person who moves from one country to another to live
Practice Religion-
to follow the teachings and rules of that religion
Citizen-
a person who belongs to a country. They have the right to live, work, and vote here.
Tradition-
something passed down over time
Chapter 1-Lesson 3 Vocabulary:
History
- the story of the past
Ancestor-
A relative who lived long before your grandparents.
Culture-
a way of life
Compare-
to see how two or more things are similar
Contrast-
to see how two or more things are different
Chapter 1- Lesson 4 Vocabulary:
Primary Source-
something written or made by a person who was part of or saw an event happen.
Secondary Source-
something written or made by someone who did not see or experience an event
Artifact-
an object made and used by people a long time ago
Oral History-
recorded information from a person who experienced an event
Family Tree-
a drawing or diagram that shows how different family members are related to each other.
Examine-
to study something closely and carefully
Chapter 2- Lesson 1 Vocabulary:
Relative location-
tells where something is by comparing it to something else
Absolute location-
the exact spot where a place is
Town-
a small community
Symbol-
something that stands for something else
Legend-
a box that identifies different symbols found on a map. It may also be called a
map key
City-
a very large community
Compass Rose-
a symbol that shows directions on a map.
Chapter 2- Lesson 2 Vocabulary:
Landform-
the shape of Earth's land
Ocean-
a large body of salt water
Continent-
a large area of land on Earth
Globe-
a round model of Earth
Model-
a small object that stands for something much larger
